The piped storm sewer system in the District carries stormwater to several district-owned ponds. This stormwater runoff can include anything picked up along its route to the ponds such as trash, debris, pet waste, and other pollutants. The ponds in the community remove pollutants from the stormwater that enters the ponds. Regular maintenance of the ponds is important to ensure efficiencies in removing pollutants and the intended functionality of the ponds. You will frequently see contractors working in and around the ponds to remove trash and debris, maintain the aquatic plants, and mow the grass. Periodically, in accordance with applicable state law, the ponds will be dredged to remove accumulated sediment. To satisfy such requirements, the ponds must be maintained as outlined below:
Wet Ponds (Pond Nos. 3, 4, and 5):
The sediment in the forebay area should be removed from the facility every two years and the dredging of the permanent pool must occur at least once every 15 years.
Dry Ponds (Pond Nos. 1 & 2):
The sediment removal from the sedimentation basin must occur once every 5 years.
It is important to ensure that no unintended liquids or materials are allowed in the District’s stormwater system as they can hinder the ponds’ intended functionality. Residents are encouraged to be proactive in ensuring that illicit items do not enter the District’s storm sewer system.
